Did you know?

Motor Vehicle Crashes (children 0-19, 2002-2003):
  • 161 children ages 0-19 were killed in motor vehicle crashes, for an average of one child death every 5 days.
  • For every Utah child killed in a motor vehicle crash (MVC), another 7 are hospitalized and 133 are seen in emergency departments for motor vehicle-related injuries.
  • 21,386 children ages 0-19 years (11,678 boys and 9,708 girls) were seen in emergency departments for MVC injuries.


Bike/Pedestrian:
  • Wearing a bike helmet can reduce the risk of head and brain injuries by 85-88%.2, 4 In 2007 in the U.S., 92% of bicyclists killed in crashes were not wearing a helmet.
  • If every Utah bike rider wore a helmet, it would prevent an estimated:
  • Three deaths;
  • 59 hospitalizations;
  • 920 emergency department visits; and
  • The loss of over $18 million in health care costs each year.
  • Nearly 60% of bicyclists involved in a bicycle/motor vehicle crash are younger than 20 years of age
  • Nearly half (49.7%) of all pedestrians involved in a crash with a motor vehicle are age 19 and under
  • From 1997 through 2006, 41 children under the age of 10 have been killed by motor vehicles on private property. Ninety-three percent of the victims were under the age of six.


Drowning (children 0-19, 2003-2005): Facts about child drowning in Utah
  • 35 children ages birth to 19 died by drowning.
  • 18 of the 34 deaths occurred in open bodies of water (lakes, rivers, etc.).
  • Drowning was the 2nd leading cause of injury death among children ages birth to 14.


Outdoor Recreation (children 0-19, 2002-2004):
  • Deaths from all-terrain vehicle (ATV) rollovers and crashes accounted for 17 of the 49 fatalities (41%) in
  • Another three children, none of whom were wearing seat belts, died in off-road crashes involving 4-wheel drive vehicles.
