There’s been some social media buzz over posts by a teenage boy who claims he took a home pregnancy test as a joke, received a positive result, and wound up being diagnosed with testicular cancer.
Experts say it’s true that home pregnancy tests can detect some types of testicular cancer in men. The test detects a hormone that is produced by pregnant women, but the same hormone is also present in some tumors, including testicular cancers.
Obviously you shouldn’t rely on home pregnancy tests as a cancer screening tool, but if testicular cancer runs in your family, I guess it couldn’t hurt to have some laying around.
