I've been thinking about the nasty stuff collected on the filter in my furnace.  Is that what our lungs look like right now after all this nasty air?!  I can't help but think that back in the territorial days it might have been even worse since everybody had to heat their homes by burning wood in their fireplaces.  Oh... and the wood wasn't always dry. Wasn't like the Territorial Legislature could have outlawed burning on "Red" days. That's why it's nice to have my gas fireplace.  Throw the switch and you've just replaced all the cutting, lugging, stacking, drying, igniting, blowing, flu cleaning, and ash cleaning.  You don't mess up yours (or anyone else's) lungs, and, oh, and you get heat like NOW!  If there's a downside to this, please don't tell me.  I don't want to know.
